Leads:
Leads are email addresses of people who have agreed to accept commercial emails and information regarding goods, products, services and business opportunities. They come from a variety of resource providers and can be either Daily leads (those whom you can contact once in a 24 hour period of time), or Bulk. Bulk leads normally require that you provide your own mailer - whether through a web based service or a desktop tool. Daily leads vendors usually provide a web based onboard mailer. Leads from these sources are usually referred to as Cold Market as you do not know the person behind the email nor where they were obtained from.

Daily leads:
Most daily leads come from FFA (free for all) link boards and networks of boards. Every 24 hour cycle those who posted to the ffa boards the previous day have their email addresses deposited into the FFA site database. Those who posted are opt-in recipients. They agreed to receive email from the FFA pro members in return for posting their links to the board for free. Most Pro FFA vendors provide some type of onboard mailer or autorespondr as a means for the Pro members to email, or respond, to those who  posted their links. This allows the Pro member to send their ads to the current database without having to downloading email addresses and submitting to them using their own bulk mailer.

The upside of this system is that you do not jeopardize your own isp and you have no need for a bulk mailer. Also, online Pro ffa submission venues tend to be very user friendly. The downside is that those leads go away every 24 hours - so you use them or lose them so to speak. Additionally, EVERYONE shares the same database. Because of this - subject lines and ad copy are crucial to your success in this type of email marketing.

Bulk Leads:
Bulk leads can come through a variety of venues - sometimes through the ffa networks. These are people who have agreed to receive commercial email in exchange for many various offers. Bulk leads usually require that you have your own mailer. Solutions for Bulk email submitters are found on the far left hand side of this page. As you will be emailing your leads yourself and expecting response, you will want to set up a marketing email account with a service that is friendly to Email Marketers for those responses. For responses, you will also want to set up a simple autoresponder message on your email service. As you progress, You should consider setting up an autoresponder service that can handle a series of emails to help you manage communicating with those who respond to your email ads. It is also recommended that you test those emails to weed out the unviable as you usually must email them via your own ISP. Unviable email addresses mean undelivered email. Undelivered email get returned - or bounced. Excessive bounce sends up a red flag to your ISP and email service provider. You save yourself a lot of grief by testing emails before sending to them.

As you will be dealing with a wide variety of Email Service Providers, all with various Spam policies and filters, you will want to review the Email Writing  Basics article as well as download and use a program which checks for spam words and then auto corrects ad copy for you.

The upside with Bulk Leads you get a lot of them to help jump start your email marketing efforts. The downside is that they can be rather complicated and somewhat time consuming to manage in that you must use your own bulk mailer to mail to the leads as well as test email addresses before you do so.
